The Gloucester County Girls League Charity Shield reached its Finals day with teams from North and South division playing for the 1st piece of ‘silverware’ on Sunday 18th October at Tuffley Park, Gloucester.
Cheltenham Town U10s earned the right to represent the North having won all 4 of their group games only conceding 1 goal along the way. Two teams represented their division, Dursley Town U10 and Gloucester City U10, after they finished equal on points.
As such the day saw all 3 play each other in short 30 min games, beginning with host Gloucester City playing Cheltenham Town.
The visitors started strongly and scored early to settle their nerves and from that point grew in confidence to lead 3-0 at the interval, even with a full squad the hosts were unable to break down the solid Robiness’ defence and game finished 6-0.
The second game saw Dursley Town enter the fray, with fresh legs, taking on Cheltenham Town. The opening spell saw both teams unable to take their opportunities until 10 mins into the game where a clumsy tackle saw Dursley awarded a spot-kick, this led to them taking the lead from a well struck penalty.
Dursley went into half-time with the advantage and Cheltenham Manager, Simon, had to ask for one last push from his players. The equaliser shortly followed and the game ended 1-1, so a penalty shoot out required.
The Cheltenham keeper stood defiant and kept all 3 out whilst their spot kicks were all on target and ensured that they won 3-0.
The Dursley team need to pick themselves up quickly to play the final game against Gloucester, it turned out to be another close match with Dursley edging it by 1 goal top nil.
34 players between the 3 squads and all were presented with medals at the conclusion and Cheltenham Town got to hold the Charity Shield aloft!.
